Common Myths Regarding Naturopathic Medicine

April 21, 2025

Even though naturopathic medicine has been a system of healthcare in use for hundreds of years, there are still many misconceptions about what Naturopathic Medicine is and what naturopathic doctors do.

I wanted to take a moment to clarify some common misconceptions or myths about naturopathic medicine that I often encounter and provide the facts behind them.

Naturopathic Doctors’ Role in Diagnosing and Treating Serious Conditions

A very common misunderstanding about Naturopathic medicine is that Naturopathic doctors don’t diagnose or treat severe conditions. With this particular concept, there is some truth to it.

First, it is essential to understand that Naturopathic Doctors are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. They are also trained and are legally obligated to recognize when a case is beyond their scope and will refer patients to specialists or conventional medical doctors when necessary.

How Naturopathic Doctors Diagnose and Treat a Broad Range of Health Conditions Using Natural Therapies

Think of a Naturopathic Doctor as a general practitioner or a family doctor that is trained to assess and diagnose a wide array of health concerns but unlike a medical doctor who will provide pharmaceutical medications for treatment, the naturopathic doctor will provide natural therapies such a nutritional supplement, dietary changes or botanical medicines for treatment.,

And in this way, it should be acknowledged that a naturopathic doctor is well suited to treat everything from various minor common ailments such as sore joints and muscles or the cold/flu to other chronic degenerative conditions such as lupus, hypothyroidism, and digestive disorders.

The Collaborative Role of Naturopathic Doctors in Serious Health Conditions

However, just like you wouldn’t go to a family doctor if there has been a sudden severe injury like a laceration or a broken bone, this is also true for Naturopathic Doctors, since the most appropriate place to have these types of health issues addressed is at a hospital emergency room.

Overall, Naturopathic Doctors are trained to work in a complementary fashion within the health care system and as a Naturopathic Doctor, I want to ensure my patients have access to all the best options to manage their health concerns and become healthy. So it is very common for my patients with severe health conditions to receive medical treatment in conjunction with naturopathic care.

Why Naturopathic Doctors Stand Apart from Health Coaches and Holistic Practitioners

Another common myth that is circulating about Naturopathic Doctors is that Naturopathic Doctors are the same as health coaches or holistic practitioners and the fact is that there is quite a lot of difference between what a health coach/holistic practitioner does and the level of training they have compared to Naturopathic Doctors.

Unlike health coaches or unlicensed holistic practitioners, licensed NDs must complete extensive medical training, pass board exams, and adhere to strict regulatory standards in licensed jurisdictions. In many cases, a holistic practitioner or a health coach may have little or no formal training and they are not regulated to provide health care advice, meaning if something goes wrong after following the advice of a health coach or holistic practitioner, the patient or client has little or no recourse for respiration or redress.

How Naturopathic Doctors Are Trained and Regulated in Ontario

Conversely, a Naturopathic Doctor goes through four years of postgraduate training at an accredited naturopathic medical college and then must successfully pass a lengthy testing process to be legally regulated to practice as a doctor in the province of Ontario.

And as regulated health professionals ,they are governed by the College of Naturopathic Medicine of Ontario (CONO), which functions to ensure patient safety and quality care when under the care of a Naturopathic Doctor. If you are thinking about seeing a Naturopathic Doctor, it is essential to check if they are licensed and regulated by CONO first and this can be done by looking them up here: https://cono.alinityapp.com/client/publicdirectory

Naturopathic treatments take a long time to work

While naturopathic medicine often focuses on long-term healing, some treatments can have rapid effects, especially for acute conditions.

Myths About Timing and Real World Comparisons

Many people will think that Naturopathic treatments take a long time to work and while this can sometimes be the case, many Naturopathic treatments can work very quickly. Naturopathic medicine often focuses on long-term healing, but certain treatments, such as homeopathy, hydrotherapy, and specific botanical medicines, can have rapid effects, especially for acute conditions.

Whenever considering how fast or slow something is it is important to understand this as a comparison to something else, so if we think a car is fast it would be considered to be slow when comparing it to a rocket so when judging the speed of naturopathic medicine it implies a comparison to the conventional medical system.

And even though pharmaceutical medications can sometimes work quickly, many medications can take weeks to take full effect and then there’s the issue of the time it takes to get the appointment with the doctor, to get the appropriate scan or testing and then getting the appointment with the specialist, this can often take months.

Whereas getting an appointment and an assessment from a Naturopathic Doctor is much more straightforward, and just as some medications work fast and others slow, the same is true for naturopathic therapy, since there are some naturopathic treatments that take weeks to work and some may work in a matter of minutes.

The Individualized Nature of Healing in Naturopathic and Conventional Medicine

Lastly, when considering how fast or slow something is we may also judge this against the goal we are trying to achieve, so if we are traveling to the next street, it should be fairly quick, but if we’re traveling to another country, this will take considerably longer.

So, if the goal of medicine is to simply relieve symptoms, then we may expect this to be quicker than the goal of treating the root cause and healing the condition, which can often take considerably more time. When considering this issue more deeply, it is difficult to say if one form of medicine is faster than the other, since it is highly individualized and because the system of health that naturopathic vs conventional medicine works in is quite different.
